Pengguna Facebook bisa meningkatkan kecerdasannya, sementara pengguna layanan mikroblogging Twitter, membuang sel-sel otaknya. Kesimpulan itu diungkapkan seorang psikolog asal Skotlandia.

Menghabiskan waktu di Facebook bisa meningkatkan apa yang disebut oleh Dr Tracy Alloway dari University of Stirling sebagai ‘memori bekerja’, sementara menggunakan Twitter atau menonton video di YouTube hanya membutuhkan sedikit kemampuan ingatan dan memiliki dampak negatif terhadap kecerdasan.

Memainkan video game bertema perang dan memecahkan teka-teki Sudoku juga bisa memicu kemampuan memori, kata Alloway, yang mengklaim bahwa memori bekerja lebih penting teradap kesuksesan dan kebahagiaan dibandingkan dengan IQ. Dalam penelitian selama 8 minggu yang dilakukan terhadap anak berusia 11 sampai 14 tahun, performa kemampuan membaca dan berhitung mereka yang lamban dalam belajar meningkat secara signifikan, demikian pula dengan IQ mereka setelah memori bekerja mereka dirangsang.

“Efeknya sangat luar biasa,” kata Alloway pada ajang British Science Festival di University of Surrey di Guilford, seperti VIVAnews kutip dari TGDaily, 8 September 2009. “Di Twitter, Anda mendapatkan arus informasi yang tidak ada habis-habisnya, tetapi itu juga sangat ringkas. Anda tidak perlu memproses informasi itu dan perhatian Anda direduksi. Anda juga tidak memanfaatkan otak dan meningkatkan hubungan antar saraf,” ucapnya.

Game perang, kata Alloway, membuat orang menggunakan memori bekerjanya dan menyimpan informasi tindakan sebelumnya serta merencanakan pergerakan yang akan datang. Selain itu terbukti juga bahwa menonton TV secara berlebihan ada kaitannya dengan kelainan mental serta penggunaan SMS berlebihan dengan nilai IQ yang rendah.

Sudoku juga bagus untuk melatih kemampuan otak, sama halnya dengan mengamati teman-teman di Facebook. Akan tetapi, menuliskan pesan teks di Twitter dan menonton video di YouTube tidak bagus dalam menstimulasi memori bekerja.
